TEACH RHYME Aaron Sloman Oct 5 1994 Updated 4 Jul 1998 [This file was shortened in July 1998. The second part has been moved to TEACH * EMAIL] This TEACH FILE assumes that you have already learnt to read a teach file into VED, that you know how to move the VED text cursor around using the arrow keys and the keypad keys or the mouse, that you know how to delete individual characters, or a line at a time, or part of a line. You also need to know how to "mark a range" as explained in TEACH MARK. Usually you can use the F1 and F2 keys to mark beginning and end of a range. Then "ENTER m" can be used to move the range and "ENTER t" to transcribe (copy) it. Alternatively you may be able to use the F9 and F8 function keys to move and copy. The purpose of this file is merely to give you practice. You will need a VED key map for your terminal. These are also available online: ask your tutor or a demonstrator for advice. -- Introduction ------------------------------------------------------- Here is part of a familiar nursery rhyme: Mary had a little lamb. Its fleece was white as snow. And everywhere that Mary went, The lamb was sure to go. Move the cursor to the line after the next one, and type in a copy of the above. Use the RETURN key when you need to start a new line. -- Editing a partially correct version -------------------------------- Here is an incomplete version with some spurious extra words. Move the VED cursor round, then using the DEL (or Delete) key delete the spurious words and fill in the gaps. You will need to use the CHARUP, CHARDOWN, CHARLEFT and CHARRIGHT keys. The WORDLEFT and WORDRIGHT keys can speed things up. Usually they are set to be the "0" and "." keys on the right hand numeric keypad. Fix this version: Mary had a little goat. Its was white as snow. everywhere that Johnny went, The big bad wolf would surely go. If you want more practice at that level fix this version also: Mary had a great big stoat Its was white as a sheet everywhere that Johnny went, -- Rearranging the order of lines ------------------------------------- For the next bit you will need to know how to "mark a range" in VED and how to move or copy a range. See TEACH MARK for details, or use the VED "menu" facilities (ENTER menu mark). If you use the VED menus you can vary the instructions slightly to use Menu options instead of keyboard buttons. Below is a version of the poem that has the lines in the wrong order. Using the "Mark Range" keys (MARKFIRST and MARKLAST, usually set to F1 and F2) and the "Move Range" command (ENTER m) or the MOVERANGE key (usually F8), mark and move the individual lines until they are in the correct order. The lamb was sure to go. And everywhere that Mary went, Its fleece was white as snow. Mary had a little lamb. -- Copying or transcribing lines -------------------------------------- Here is a version with two missing lines. Mary had a little lamb. And everywhere that Mary went, Move the cursor back and forth between this version and the previous version, and use the Mark Range keys and the COPYRANGE key or the "transcribe" command (ENTER t) copy the missing lines from the complete version to the correct part of the incomplete version. When you have the whole stanza complete, mark all of it and make a copy of the whole thing after this line. -- Deleting whole lines and portions of lines ------------------------- Here is a version that has some extra complete lines, and some lines with junk to the left of the line and other lines with junk to the right of the line. Use the LINEDELETE key (usually set to F4) to get rid of the completely wrong lines, use the CLEARHEAD key (F3) to get rid of stuff to the left of a line (do it by putting the cursor to the right of the junk before you use the key) and the CLEARTAIL key (F5) to get rid of stuff to the right of a line (do it by putting the cursor to the left of the junk before pressing the key.) Mary had a little lamb. This line is junk and should go. The next line has junk to left (Use CLEARHEAD F3) *********** Its fleece was white as snow. Another junk line to delete. The next line has junk to right. And everywhere that Mary went, ********** (use CLEARTAIL F5) Another junk line. The next line has junk right and left. LOVELY LOVELY JUNK TO GO The lamb was sure to go. AND MORE OF THE SAME Here is another copy of the above. Try fixing it again, for practice. Mary had a little lamb. This line is junk and should go. The next line has junk to left (Use CLEARHEAD) *********** Its fleece was white as snow. Another junk line to delete. The next line has junk to right. And everywhere that Mary went, ********** (use CLEARTAIL) Another junk line. The next line has junk right and left. LOVELY LOVELY JUNK TO GO The lamb was sure to go. AND MORE OF THE SAME Another copy follows, just in case you want more practice. Mary had a little lamb. This line is junk and should go, using LINEDELETE. (Use CLEARHEAD) *********** Its fleece was white as snow. Another junk line to delete. The next line has junk to right. And everywhere that Mary went, ********** (use CLEARTAIL) Another junk line. The next line has junk right and left. LOVELY LOVELY JUNK TO GO The lamb was sure to go. AND MORE OF THE SAME Now read TEACH EMAIL to learn how to read and send email in VED.
