NON-UK ACADEMIC USERS OF POPLOG BETWEEN ABOUT 1983 AND 1998 Not all of these would have used Poplog for all that time. Towards the end of that period Poplog became more expensive, and was only available on expensive machines, e.g. Sun workstations and servers, DEC Alpha, HP servers, IBM servers, and others. Academics were then moving towards much cheaper machines: Linux and Windows on PC. The Windows version of Poplog could not be used with graphical facilities without the addition of an expensive commercial product to support unix system calls, and the Linux version of Poplog had not yet been developed. Moreover, supporting academics, who were charged very little, was costly to ISL, as the internet was not then available. So usage by academics declined markedly in the second half of the 1990s.
