    split( string ) -> ( s1, ..., sN )

This splits a string into substrings at whitespace boundaries.  The
4 characters counting as whitespace are space, tab, newline and
carriage return i.e. \s (ASCII 32), \t (ASCII 9), \n (ASCII 10), \r.
(ASCII 13).
