papers that have not necessarily been published though some may be
later. They are in roughly reverse chronological order -- only
roughly because often old items are updated and I may forget to move
them up this list.

Predicting
affordance changes.
It is obvious that animals and robots acting
in the world need to perceive and be able to predict and control
physical states and processes involving their bodies and objects in
the environment. It is not so obvious that they need to perceive
something more abstract; what J.J.Gibson called "affordances" and
also changes in affordances, including both action-affordances and
epistemic affordances.

Including a new(?) view of the relations between philosophy and

Grice's principles/maxims for communication.
This links up with old
arguments about the need for an internal language to have evolved
before a language for communication, also discussed
in this presentation.

deliberative architectures.
A partial attempt to clear up confusions and ambiguities about what
is meant by 'deliberative', 'reactive', 'reflective',
'meta-management' and other high level labels for aspects of
information processing architectures.

Orthogonal Recombinable Competences Acquired by Altricial Species
(Blankets, string, and plywood)
Discussion of some requirements for ontology extension during
development and the requirement for new competences to 'scale out',
i.e. to be capable of being combined in novel ways with other
competences.

Varieties of computing and AI research.
Originally based on a CPHC conference on how to raise standards in
CS research and awareness of its importance.
